Friends and fellow co-laborers in Christ shared with me a word the Holy Spirit had been speaking to their spirits about a stronghold over the Body of Christ. Several days and many hours of pondering and prayer passed before the eyes of my heart began to understand this word.
I recognize that this stronghold has subtly been operating in my life and thought process. As a part of breaking that stronghold in my life, I have decided that I would write a series of blog entries to ‘break’ this stronghold. In the process, my prayer is that as you read these reflections, you too will be set free from the stronghold of ‘false humility’.
We often recognize that 'a picture is worth a thousand words.' In fact, when writing a missionary newsletter that is why I like to include lots of pictures. People often skip over reading a newsletter but will glance at pictures.
What then does the picture of humility look like? JESUS. Good answer. When asked a question, my kids always say they can never go wrong with the answer: Jesus, God or Love.
What does Jesus look like? He looks exactly like the Father. Hebrews 1: 3 "And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power."
Jesus is not just an image of God...like what we see in a mirror because an image could be distorted somewhat, rather he is the perfect, authentic, real, representation of God.
What is the exact representation of His nature then? What does God say about himself to Moses? Exodus 34:6-7
6 Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in loving-kindness and truth;
7 who keeps loving-kindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
An understanding of who God is helps in understanding the meaning of humility. I either believe what God says about Himself, His word, or others or I don't. I choose to read scripture the way it is written: all of it from the beginning to the end. The Word of God is what it says it is and does what it says it does!Again, I must read scripture with this lense: The word of God is what it says it is and does what it says it does.
False humility would be that I must read the word of God through a certain a lens. False humility complicates the reading of The Word. It sounds good to say that I read the word through the lenses of dispensationalism or covenant theology but in reality for the everyday person to read the Bible through a theological bent then we would all have to go to seminary.Let the Word of God speak for itself. The Word of God is what it says it is and does what it says it does!
